We were thrilled to once again lead the Parade of Skulls and Skeletons of the Cleveland Día de Muertos/ Day of the Dead Festival. Presented by Cleveland Public Theatre/Teatro Público de Cleveland and Día de Muertos Ohio Artistic Director Héctor Castellanos Lara, the annual Day of the Dead Festival was a vibrant community celebration for the whole family. The event of Día de Muertos honored the memory of those who have passed—a treasured holiday throughout Mexico and Latin America.

We participated for the first time in the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center celebration of Hispanic Heritage! We joined the dancers in Martha Sofía’s Brazilian Axé dance workshop and played other rhythms from Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. This was an exciting free, public, and family-friendly event.

Samba da Cidade played at this year’s Parade the Circle, accompanying lead artist Héctor Castellanos Lara’s artwork "The Cross Gulf Travelers." Our theme was “Filhos da Paz” (Children of Peace), a visual and musical celebration of the gifts of peace, harmony, and healing bestowed upon humans by their ancestral parents which, according to Yoruba tradition, are Obatalá and Yemayá.

Samba da Cidade celebrated Carnaval with BRAZUCA, the Brazilian Undergraduate Cultural Association at Case Western Reserve University. Heating up the winter weather with samba, SDC supported BRAZUCA’s celebration of Brazil’s famous annual event.
Spontaneous dancing emerged throughout the decorated ballroom and students joined our group to round out the evening with drumming lessons!

A small ensemble of SDC drummers participated in the Firelands Symphony Orchestra’s “Around Town Tour” at the Bowling Green State University Firelands campus. In an outdoor stage surrounded by a lagoon and beautiful gardens, the band played a high-spirited set of Brazilian rhythms while one of SDC's dancers engaged the audience in samba dancing for this community event.

SDC kicked off the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Parade the Circle, accompanying lead artist Hector Castellanos Lara’s artwork, “Playing and Dancing under the Mystical Dragonfly”. SDC’s theme for its float, costumes, music and dance choreography was “Iron Fly”, a celebration of the Yoruba Orisha (god) Ogun, who clears paths for humans and presides over creativity, justice, technological transformation, iron and metalwork.
