We are so excited to participate for the first time in the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center celebration of Hispanic Heritage! We will be joining the dancers in Martha Sofía’s Brazilian Axé dance workshop and then will play other rhythms from Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. Come groove and dance with us! The event is free, public, and family-friendly.

One World Day  

Samba da Cidade played two shows at One World Day in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens—the first at the Uzbekistan Garden, the second at the Scottish Garden. We celebrated Cleveland's diversity with our signature high-energy drumming!

This highly engaging program featured the Moises Borges Quartet playing an upbeat set of Brazilian music and a finale of explosive drumming pieces from Samba da Cidade. This family-friendly event in downtown Port Clinton also showcased dancing with the crowd, led by our very own instructor, Martha Sofía!

Samba da Cidade played at this year’s Parade the Circle, accompanying lead artist Héctor Castellanos Lara’s artwork "The Cross Gulf Travelers." Our theme was “Filhos da Paz” (Children of Peace), a visual and musical celebration of the gifts of peace, harmony, and healing bestowed upon humans by their ancestral parents which, according to Yoruba tradition, are Obatalá and Yemayá.

Samba da Cidade celebrated Carnaval with BRAZUCA, the Brazilian Undergraduate Cultural Association at Case Western Reserve University. Heating up the winter weather with samba, SDC supported BRAZUCA’s celebration of Brazil’s famous annual event.

Spontaneous dancing emerged throughout the decorated ballroom and students joined our group to round out the evening with drumming lessons!

Cleveland’s Día de Muertos festival featured Samba da Cidade’s energetic drumming during the outdoor “Skulls & Skeletons” Procession/Procesión de “Calaveras y Esqueletos”!

Presented by Cleveland Public Theatre/Teatro Público de Cleveland and Día de Muertos Ohio Artistic Director Héctor Castellanos Lara, the annual Day of the Dead festival was a vibrant celebration for the whole family. The event of Día de Muertos honors the memory of those who have passed—a treasured holiday throughout Mexico and Latin America.

Jones Home Neighborhood Celebrate Family Day

Cleveland’s Jones Home Neighborhood presented its fourth Annual Celebrate Family Day! Along with food and entertainment from the neighborhood, SDC performed its samba repertoire. Afterward, children enjoyed the opportunity to try the instruments and receive an introductory drumming lesson from Dylan and the bateria!

Around Town Tour Series by the Firelands Symphony Orchestra

A small ensemble of SDC drummers participated in the Firelands Symphony Orchestra’s “Around Town Tour” at the Bowling Green State University Firelands campus. In an outdoor stage surrounded by a lagoon and beautiful gardens, the band played a high-spirited set of Brazilian rhythms while one of SDC's dancers engaged the audience in samba dancing for this community event.

“Clearing The Path” at Parade The Circle

SDC kicked off the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Parade the Circle, accompanying lead artist Hector Castellanos Lara’s artwork, “Playing and Dancing under the Mystical Dragonfly”. SDC’s theme for its float, costumes, music and dance choreography was “Iron Fly”, a celebration of the Yoruba Orisha (god) Ogun, who clears paths for humans and presides over creativity, justice, technological transformation, iron and metalwork.

SDC was featured as one of the musical and dance groups invited to celebrate cultural diversity at the International Fest of the Medina County District Library (Brunswick branch). The ensemble’s performance was a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture and an opportunity to demonstrate and engage with multiple percussion instruments for children and adults alike.
